Period Delay
We often come across women who complain about their period arriving in time to disrupt important plans. Chances are that you might have also faced something similar at least once. Perhaps you had to cancel a special trip because of the period! Well, this is where skipping it temporarily would come in handy, wouldn’t it?
Reasons why women choose to delay period
Let’s face it, inconvenience is the major reason why women likely want to delay their period temporarily and take a period delay medication. This can either be because of an exam, an athletic event, vacation, or even a special occasion such as a honeymoon or wedding. That said, apart from all that’s mentioned, the reason may also be something major or minor.
That said, sometimes these medications are also used to manage a few symptoms. These include the following.
• Inability to use tampons due to some physical or mental disability
• Menstruation worsens due to conditions such as anemia or endometriosis
• To get relief from abnormal bleeding or painful cramps
• Relief from breast tenderness, mood swings, or bloating
• To get relief from migraine
How does period delay medication work?
There are some medications, such as Primolut N - a branded form of Norethisterone. The medication consists of a synthetic version of progesterone. For those who do not know, periods are triggered every month due to a drop in progesterone levels in the female body. Thus, by taking a reliable period delay medication, you can keep your hormone level up, thus delaying the onset of the period by around 17 days.
As mentioned, Norethisterone is a generic medication name. So, when you opt for an online consultation at Pharmulous, our healthcare professional will prescribe a branded version of the same, such as Primolut N, subject to its availability.
Anyone who wants to take a period delay tablet, will have to start doing so about three days before their period is due, and continue taking the pill for 17 days - thrice a day. If you start any later before the period is due, the medication will not work, and you may have bleeding or spotting.
Do you still need contraception while having sex?
Do not confuse period delay medication with contraceptives! They are not contraceptives! So, you’ll still need a barrier contraceptive such as a condom, unless of course you have a long acting reversible contraceptive in place. However, if you have doubts regarding the use of period delay tablets with combined pills, we’d recommend you to connect with our healthcare professional at Pharmulous.
That said, period delay medicines should not be used by pregnant women, or women who’re trying to get pregnant. This is also not suitable for women who’ve given birth in the last six weeks. Also, if you are breastfeeding, taking a period delay medication will lead to a temporary reduction in your milk.
So, if you’re not sure, or want an expert opinion before popping the pill, we’d recommend connecting with us at Pharmulous.
